Outdoor Early Childhood Educator

Richmond, VA • Part-Time
About the Role

Do you love working with young children amongst the flora and fauna of beautiful Virginia? Do you love insects, flowers, mud, all-weather play, compost, vegetables, magical discoveries, and all of the joy that comes with learning outdoors? Do you particularly love toddlers, and see this period of development as one of the most magical developmental periods of discovery and growth?

If so, we would love to meet you at Bonny Day RVA, a new parent workspace and child playspace in Bon Air. This June, we will launch our signature program Parent Screen Time, Child Green Time, where children ages 18 months - 5 years will engage in high-quality outdoor learning in our magical sensory garden while parents work on professional or personal tasks in our peaceful space indoors.

At Bonny Day RVA, we are seeking educators who have experience with or curiosity for nature-based learning as we launch our all-weather, outdoor program in Bon Air. We hope you see early childhood as one of the richest periods of development and no place for worksheets, drilling and flashcards.  We think it’s counterintuitive for young children to sit and listen for 6+ hours a day, when instead we could work with their need for movement, sensory play, and connection, and we hope you feel the same. We believe all learning is rooted in safe, joyful, and loving relationships, and that the outdoor learning environment creates a space where we can honor young children and their needs.

This role will serve as a co-lead teaching position alongside the program founder, and is an opportunity to join us in the beginning as we grow with the community.

Schedule & Pay

This is a part-time W-2 position for the summer season  on site at Bonny Day RVA. Staff will work approximately 2 days per week, Tuesday–Friday, from 8:30 AM–3:30 PM, at a rate of $18/hour, with opportunities for additional hours and growth as the program expands. Summer Program I runs June 2–July 10, and Summer Program II runs July 28–September 7.

Qualifications
  • At least 2 years prior experience working with young children required. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in Reggio Emilia-inspired, nature-based, play-based, or other progressive early childhood settings.

  • Must be committed to using positive guidance and gentle, developmentally appropriate behavior support strategies with children

  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, light rain, and cold temperatures

  • Must be comfortable assisting with diapering, toileting, and other age-appropriate care routines while maintaining health and safety standards.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with both children and adults

  • Commitment to maintaining a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment

  • Must successfully complete all required background checks prior to employment
